Friday Institute Directors Update Legislature and Business Leaders
Executive Director of the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, Glenn Kleiman recently presented information regarding the 1:1 Learning Initiative to the Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on IT. The 1:1 Learning Initiative is a pilot project, where every teacher and student receives a laptop computer and wireless Internet access is provided throughout the school. The goal of the initiative is to use the technology to improve teaching practices, increase student achievement, and better prepare students for work, citizenship, and life in the 21st century.
According the Kleiman, “To be successful, a one-to-one initiative must be approached as a strategic education initiative enabled by technology; it requires much more than simply providing computers for students and teachers.”
The Friday Institute’s Technology Director, Phil Emer also presented an update on the NC School Connectivity Program. The goal of the program is to provide broadband Internet access to every school and LEA in North Carolina. Currently, 107 of 115 school systems have been connected or are in the process of receiving their broadband connections. Total connectivity of all LEAs is expected in February 2009.
The same messages were delivered during a meeting focusing on an update of the 1:1 Learning Initiative for business and education leaders hosted by SAS.
